about

Something They Call Myth write music steeped in melancholy, drawing on their memories and conversations with each other for inspiration. Though the production sounds playful with the syncopated piano riff and bright sounds, 'Counting Friends' tells a story about two best friends, exploring the growing pains and insecurities that can develop as friends progress through life and make new connections. While this can be exciting, sometimes we really just want things to stay exactly as they are. The light-hearted feel of the song makes a heavy subject easier to talk about, and can also be taken as a bit of tongue-in-cheek.

lyrics

There was only me
'Til I met you
Then my circle grew
Now we're two

Where would we be
If we were three?
You wanted more
So three becomes four

Some say five
Would make me feel alive
But all I really need is you

There was only me
'Til I met you
Then our circle grew
Now we're two

Let me tag along
But this is your song
I've nothing to say
No reason to stay

Miss the days when
It was only me
and I met you
Before our circle grew
We were only two

Convinced we would stay
Perfect this way
Endlessly, you and me
Convinced we would stay
Perfect this way
Effortlessly

Happy and loud
You love the crowd
It's plain to see
You chose them over me

There was only me
'Til I met you
But your circle grew
Wish we were two

Convinced we would stay
Perfect this way
(We were only two)
Endlessly, you and me
Convinced we would stay
Perfect this way
(But your circle grew)
Effortlessly

Convinced we would stay
Perfect this way
(We were only two)
Endlessly, you and me
Convinced we would stay
Perfect this way
(But your circle grew)
Effortlessly

Some say five
Would make me feel alive
But all I really need is you
